TYPES OF SPINAL CORD INJURIES

If you sustained a head injury in an accident it’s very likely your neck and spine suffered damage. In car accidents, whiplash is an extremely common neck injury and should not be overlooked as something minor.

Accidents involving motorcycles and large trucks often result in more serious spinal cord injuries that can lead to:

Partial Paralysis

Bruised or partially severed spinal cords may result in partial paralysis. In these cases, the victim may still retain some feeling or mobility in the affected area. They are only “partially paralyzed.” Some cases can be reversed, while others are permanent.

Total Paralysis

A completely severed spinal cord will result in total paralysis below the area of injury. The person will have no feeling or mobility in the affected area. Total paralysis is usually irreversible, meaning that the victim will be paralyzed for the rest of his or her life.

Paraplegia

Spinal cord injuries resulting in paralysis of the legs, but not the arms, is known as paraplegia. Paraplegics are unable to walk, but still have use of their arms and are usually able to utilize wheelchairs to get around.

Tetraplegia / Quadriplegia

Spinal cord injuries resulting in paralysis from the neck down, including the arms and the legs, is known as quadriplegia or tetraplegia. This is the most severe form of paralysis. Tetraplegics and quadriplegics require caretakers since they cannot use their arms or legs.

The lawyers at RMD are everything you could want. They are experts in their field, and extremely efficient, thorough and caring. They called me back immediately and spent a substantial amount of time explaining the process to me and quite honestly calming me down. I never felt pressured or felt a salesman vibe. I did get the sense that I was in good hands. They handled everything with minimal stress for me, which was key. Thanks for everything.

I have worked with John, a managing partner, and have been very happy with his casual every-man approach to some rather complex issues. He put things in plain, easy to digest language and made me feel comfortable with the process and his handle on the situation. Would definitely recommend.

John went above and beyond to assist me with my personal injury case after I was involved in a car accident. I spoke to several attorneys regarding my case and although I decided against hiring one due to the minor damages on my car, John was the only attorney I felt like I could trust. I was truly blown away by his kindness, honesty, and willingness to answer all of my questions and go over different options with me. He truly went above and beyond and showed a great amount of compassion and integrity. If I'm ever involved in an accident again, I will not hesitate to call John at RMD Law.

Frequently Asked Questions

According to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center (NSCISC) and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), motor vehicle accidents and catastrophic falls are the most common causes of spinal cord injuries in the United States as of 2021. Spinal Cord Injuries are also commonly caused by gunshot wounds and athletic or recreational activities.

Determining the specific compensation amount for a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in California is a complex process that depends on various factors including economic and non-economic damages.

Economic damages are intended to cover specific financial losses incurred as a result of the injury, and they may include:

  • Medical Expenses: This includes costs associated with emergency medical care, hospitalization, surgeries, medication, therapy, rehabilitation, and ongoing medical treatment.
  • Lost Wages: Compensation may be provided for the income lost due to the TBI, including missed work during recovery and potential future earning capacity if the injury affects the ability to work.
  • Future Medical Costs: If the TBI requires long-term care or ongoing medical treatment, compensation may be awarded to cover anticipated future medical expenses.

Non-economic damages aim to compensate for subjective losses that are more challenging to quantify, such as:

  • Pain and Suffering: Compensation may be awarded for physical pain, emotional distress, and diminished quality of life resulting from the TBI.
  • Loss of Enjoyment of Life: If the injury affects the ability to participate in activities previously enjoyed, compensation may be provided for the loss of enjoyment of life.
  • Emotional Distress: This includes compensation for psychological and emotional trauma resulting from the TBI.

There are no predetermined or fixed amounts for compensation in California.
Each case is evaluated individually, considering the unique circumstances and severity of the TBI. The negotiation, settlement, or litigation process determines the final compensation amount. It is best to consult with a personal injury attorney with experience in TBI cases for better guidance on next steps.

At RMD Law, we believe that reputation is everything. When clients trust us with their cases, we do everything in our power to help guide them. That means personal service and sharp advocacy. We care about the details of your case because that is how we can get you the best settlement.
