Effects of a Traumatic Brain Injury

The brain is one of the most important and most sensitive organs in the body. Even slight injury or damage can have long-lasting or permanent effects. A traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs when a blow to the head results in a deep bruise, causing fluid to rush to the area and placing pressure on that section of the brain. This reduces blood flow to that section of the brain which, if not reversed, could cause brain cells to die. This can lead to temporary or permanent loss of memory, vision, speech, mobility, mental capacity, and more.

In less severe cases of TBI, a person can recover their memory, speech, or other abilities that they lost after their brain injury. In severe TBI cases, a person can slip into a coma or suffer permanent brain damage, preventing them from returning to the quality of life that they knew before their accident.

Call 911 or go to the emergency room immediately if you suspect a brain injury; then call RMD Law at to ensure the full compensation you are owed!

Types of Spinal Cord Injuries

If you sustained a head injury in an accident it’s very likely your neck and spine suffered damage as well. In car accidents, whiplash is an extremely common neck injury and should not be overlooked as something minor. Accidents involving motorcycles and large trucks often result in more serious spinal cord injuries that can lead to:

  • Partial paralysis: Bruised or partially severed spinal cords may result in partial paralysis. In these cases, the victim may still retain some feeling or mobility in the affected area. They are only “partially paralyzed.” Some cases can be reversed, while others are permanent.
  • Total paralysis: A completely severed spinal cord will result in total paralysis below the area of injury. The person will have no feeling or mobility in the affected area. Total paralysis is usually irreversible, meaning that the victim will be paralyzed for the rest of his or her life.
  • Paraplegia: Spinal cord injuries resulting in paralysis of the legs, but not the arms, is known as paraplegia. Paraplegics are unable to walk, but still have use of their arms and are usually able to utilize wheelchairs to get around.
  • Tetraplegia / quadriplegia: Spinal cord injuries resulting in paralysis from the neck down, including the arms and the legs, is known as quadriplegia or tetraplegia. This is the most severe form of paralysis. Tetraplegics and quadriplegics require caretakers since they cannot use their arms or legs.

Never Delay Getting Medical Treatment

The heavy impact of vehicle accident or trip and fall has the potential to damage your brain and your spine. You should never delay seeking treatment when you suspect such injuries. Not only are these injuries potentially life-threatening, but the insurance companies will also use any delay in treatment to justify offering you less compensation than you are fairly entitled to.

Consult a doctor immediately if you are experiencing any of these symptoms:

  • Change in pupil size
  • Blurred vision
  • Impaired senses
  • Lack of coordination
  • Slurred speech
  • Convulsions
  • Bruising, swelling, or stiffness of neck
  • Open scalp wound
  • Paralysis
  • Excessive drowsiness
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Vomiting
  • Severe headaches
  • Drop in blood pressure
  • Low breathing rate
  • Fluid draining from ears, nose, or mouth

A good personal injury attorney understands the mechanics underlying the pain you have suffered and can explain to the insurance companies that your injuries are permanent. California law entitles you to have your injuries treated, allows you money for your pain and suffering, and can even enable you to recover compensation for future treatment that your physicians recommend.
